Alex’s House was conceived in October of 2009 when God gave Bill Howard a Damascus Road experience, instructing him to, “Go to Haiti and start an orphanage for homeless children.”
With 25 years of Senior Pastor experience under his belt, and looking forward to the slower paced “grandchildren” years, this calling was the last thing Bill expected. But God was clear, so Bill began to pray and research next steps. Five weeks later, he visited Haiti to experience firsthand the work God was calling him to do. During this visit, IMB missionaries Sam and Delores York introduced him to three young Haitian men whom they were discipling; Alex Alincy, and Jimmy and Patrick Georges. They immediately discovered that God had given Bill and Alex the identical vision to start an orphanage for homeless children.
Through prayer and faith, these four men made the commitment to start the orphanage.
On January 12, 2010, one month after that decision was made, a 7.0 earthquake devastated the island of Haiti killing 300,000 and leaving over one million people homeless. Three days after the quake, Alex’s body was recovered from under the rubble. While teaching a Bible study for young men, the home he was in collapsed. There were no survivors.
Alex’s earthly life had come to an end, but the vision God had placed on their hearts had just begun. In February of 2010, Bill, Jimmy and Patrick took a bold step of faith and began Alex’s House Orphanage to the glory of God and in memory of their friend Alex Alincy.
The video below shows our humble beginnings as the orphanage was birthed in Jimmy and Patrick’s home in February of 2010.
As the Lord blessed, the ministry grew rapidly and we began to reach out to others in need providing food, shelter, beds, and most of all the love of Jesus.
In September of 2012, after 12 months of intensive labor, we reached a great milestone and moved into our new campus in Kaliko, 33 miles north of Port-a-Prince. The video below captures that exciting day the children saw their new home for the first time.
Today, churches and individuals across America are joining together to raise these beautiful children and to touch Haiti with the light of Christ.
As the months have turned into years, God has expanded the original vision in order to reach a spiritually dark Haiti with the light of Christ. Watch below to learn about our new Disciples Center and the three ways it will be used to help other follow Jesus.
As we continue to wait for land to purchase in order to build the Disciples Center, we press forward with advancing villages with the Gospel of Jesus Christ through our new over-arching ministry name: Disciples Village.
